Quick answer: A UAE freelance visa is a residence visa built on a free-zone freelance permit. All-in it costs roughly AED 7,500–26,000 – permit (~AED 5,000–8,000) + establishment card (~AED 2,000) + residence visa (~AED 3,300–6,340) – with IFZA, SHAMS and RAKEZ the cheapest zones. It is issued for 1, 2 or 3 years, lets you invoice clients under your own name, and can later step up to a Green Visa once income reaches AED 360,000/year.
The freelance visa is how the UAE legitimised working for yourself. Instead of borrowing someone else’s visa or risking working on a tourist entry, you hold a permit in your own name, invoice clients legally, and sponsor your own residency. For consultants, creatives and independent professionals it is the cleanest, cheapest entry into the UAE.
This guide covers the real cost, the best free zones, the requirements, and how a freelance visa relates to the Green Visa. It has been reviewed by Jashvantkumar Prajapati.
Freelancers over-pay because they shop on brand, not fit. The zone that is cheapest for a graphic designer is not the one for a management consultant. Match the activity to the zone first – the price follows.

What a freelance visa is
A freelance visa is a UAE residence visa built on a freelance permit – a licence from a free zone (or MOHRE) that lets you work independently in your professional field, invoice clients under your own name, and self-sponsor your residency without a full trade licence or an employer. It is the legitimate alternative to freelancing on someone else’s visa.
It is not the same as the UAE digital nomad visa: that is for people employed or self-employed abroad who work remotely from the UAE, whereas a freelance visa lets you serve clients – including UAE clients – under your own local permit. If your income comes from a foreign employer, the digital nomad route may fit better.
What it really costs
| Component | Indicative cost (AED) |
|---|---|
| Freelance permit (per year) | 5,000 – 8,000 |
| Establishment card | ~2,000 |
| Residence visa (outside UAE / 3-yr standard) | ~3,300 |
| Residence visa (inside UAE / express) | up to ~6,340 |
| Typical all-in (incl. insurance) | 7,500 – 26,000 |
The cheapest zones (IFZA, SHAMS, RAKEZ) sit at the lower end; premium Dubai zones and express processing at the upper end. Indicative 2026 figures.

Stepping up to a Green Visa
Have questions about this?
A 10-minute call with Mirza often saves weeks of research. No obligation β ask anything about your situation.
A freelance visa gets you legal and residing; a Green Visa gets you five self-sponsored years. Once your freelance income reaches AED 360,000 a year and you hold a bachelor’s or specialised diploma, you can upgrade – a common and sensible progression as a freelance practice matures.
Renewal and choosing the right activity
A freelance visa renews with its underlying permit – the permit annually, the residence visa at the end of its 1, 2 or 3-year term. The choice that matters most at the start, and again at renewal, is the activity: your permit only covers the professional categories you registered, so if your work has broadened you may need to add or change activities. Keeping your income evidence in order also matters, because it is what lets you step up to a Green Visa later. Renewing is cheap; getting the activity wrong and re-doing the permit is not.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Shopping on brand, not activity fit. The cheapest zone for a designer is not the cheapest for a consultant – match the activity first.
- Budgeting the permit only. The establishment card and residence visa sit on top – the all-in is what matters.
- Picking a paused zone. Some older Dubai zones restricted direct freelance issuance in early 2026.
- Not keeping income evidence for the AED 360,000 Green Visa step-up.
- Working on a tourist visa in the meantime – it is not legal, and it risks the whole application.

How much does a freelance visa cost in the UAE?
All-in, most freelancers pay between roughly AED 7,500 and AED 26,000, depending on the free zone, visa length and add-ons like health insurance. That breaks down into three parts: the freelance permit itself (about AED 5,000–8,000 a year), an establishment card (around AED 2,000), and the residence visa (roughly AED 3,300 applied from outside the UAE up to about AED 6,340 for inside-country express processing). The cheapest zones – IFZA, SHAMS and RAKEZ – sit at the lower end.
What is a freelance visa in the UAE?
It is a residence visa built on a freelance permit – a licence that lets you work for yourself, invoice clients under your own name, and sponsor your own residency without a traditional employer or a full trade licence. You obtain the permit from a free zone (or MOHRE), get an establishment card, and then attach a residence visa. It is the legitimate way to freelance in the UAE rather than working on someone else's visa.
Which free zone is best for a freelance visa?
For cost, IFZA, SHAMS (Sharjah) and RAKEZ are usually the most affordable. GoFreelance, run by the Dubai Development Authority through TECOM communities, is the best-known Dubai route and strong for media, tech and education activities; twofour54 serves Abu Dhabi's creative sector. The right zone depends on your activity, your budget and where you need to be based – note that some older Dubai zones restricted direct freelance issuance in early 2026.
What are the requirements for a UAE freelance visa?
You need a valid passport, to choose a free zone and an activity within your professional field, and often a CV, portfolio or proof of qualifications for regulated activities. Some zones ask for evidence of income – commonly around AED 7,500–10,000 per month – particularly if you later want to step up to a self-sponsored Green Visa, which requires AED 360,000 of annual income. You then complete the medical, Emirates ID and health insurance like any resident.
How long does a freelance visa last?
Freelance residence visas are typically issued for 1, 2 or 3 years, depending on the free zone and the package you choose, and they are renewable. The underlying freelance permit is renewed annually. A longer visa reduces the per-year cost and the paperwork, so if you plan to stay it is usually worth taking the longer option upfront.
Can I sponsor my family on a freelance visa?
Yes, provided you meet the standard family-sponsorship income test – generally a salary or income equivalent of AED 4,000 (or AED 3,000 plus accommodation). Because freelance income is variable, some authorities look for consistent bank statements to evidence it. Once that is satisfied you can sponsor your spouse and children like any other resident. See our family visa guide.
Freelance visa or Green Visa - what is the difference?
A freelance visa is the residence visa built on a free-zone freelance permit – the practical way to legally freelance. The Green Visa is a separate, 5-year self-sponsored residence category that a freelancer can qualify for once income reaches AED 360,000 a year. Many people start on a freelance visa and later upgrade to a Green Visa for the longer term and added stability. See our Green Visa guide.
Can you set up my freelance visa?
Yes. We compare the free zones on cost and activity fit, secure the freelance permit and establishment card, and coordinate the residence visa, medical, Emirates ID and insurance – and, if your income supports it, the step up to a Green Visa. We are independent, so we recommend the zone that fits you, not the one that pays the best commission. Book a call for a tailored quote.
