Quick answer: ICP Smart Services is the official online platform of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP). Use it free at smartservices.icp.gov.ae or the UAEICP app to apply for and renew visas and Emirates ID, and to check your status. One rule decides which portal you use for a visa-status check: ICP covers Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, UAQ, RAK and Fujairah; Dubai residency is checked on GDRFA (gdrfad.gov.ae). Only ever use the official channels.

Most people meet ICP Smart Services at a stressful moment – a visa about to expire, an Emirates ID that has not arrived, or a status check that says “no record found.” The platform itself is well built. The confusion is almost always the same two things: which portal to use, and how to read the result.

This guide explains what ICP Smart Services is, exactly how to check your visa and Emirates ID status, the ICP-versus-GDRFA rule that trips everyone up, and how to spot the fake sites that copy it. It has been reviewed by Jashvantkumar Prajapati, who has handled UAE residency and Emirates ID processes for over two decades.

Nine out of ten “my visa check isn’t working” problems are one mistake: a Dubai visa being checked on ICP instead of GDRFA. Get the portal right and the record appears instantly. That one distinction saves people hours of panic.

What ICP Smart Services is

ICP Smart Services is the digital front door to the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security – the federal body responsible for identity, citizenship, entry permits, residency and Emirates ID across the UAE. Through one account you can apply for and renew services, pay official fees, and track everything you have submitted. It replaced the old scatter of counters and typing centres with a single online platform, reachable on the web at smartservices.icp.gov.ae and through the official UAEICP smartphone app.

Crucially, it is free to use. There is no charge to open an account, browse services or run a status check – you pay only the published government fee for the specific transaction you complete.

What you can do on the platform

  • Entry permits – apply for tourist, visit, work or family entry permits and track them.
  • Residence visas – new residence permits, renewals, cancellations and status changes when you switch employer or sponsor.
  • Emirates ID – apply, renew, replace a lost card, and check the status of your application.
  • Status checks – verify the validity of a visa or entry permit by passport or unified number.
  • Fines and payments – view and settle certain identity and residency-related fees.

ICP or GDRFA – which portal do you use?

This is the distinction that causes the most confusion, so it is worth being precise. Your emirate of issue decides the portal:

If your visa was issued in...Use this portal for visa status
Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, UAQ, RAK, FujairahICP – smartservices.icp.gov.ae
DubaiGDRFA Dubai – gdrfad.gov.ae

Emirates ID is federal and always sits with ICP, wherever your visa was issued. It is only the visa/residency status check that splits Dubai (GDRFA) from the rest (ICP).

How to check your UAE visa status

For a visa issued outside Dubai, use ICP Smart Services:

Open the official portal 1 min

Go to smartservices.icp.gov.ae or open the UAEICP app. For a Dubai visa, use the GDRFA Dubai portal instead.

Choose the passport-information service 1 min

Select the passport-information or visa-enquiry option from the public services.

Enter your details 2 min

Provide your passport number, nationality and date of birth – or your unified (UID) number.

Complete the security check 1 min

Enter the on-screen verification code and submit.

Read your result instant

The portal shows your entry-permit or residence-visa status and its validity date.

How to check your Emirates ID status

Emirates ID sits with ICP for everyone. To track a new or renewed card, use your application (PRAN) number on ICP Smart Services or the UAEICP app; to confirm an existing card’s validity, use your Emirates ID number. The portal shows whether the card is under production, ready, or delivered. If your Emirates ID is expiring, you renew it through the same platform, usually alongside your residence-visa renewal.

Avoiding fake “ICP” websites

Because these searches are so common, a cluster of unofficial sites copy the ICP name to charge for free checks or to harvest passport and Emirates ID data. Protect yourself with three rules:

  • The only official channels are smartservices.icp.gov.ae and the UAEICP app – both on the government’s own domain.
  • Never pay a “service fee” to check a visa or Emirates ID status – the official check is free.
  • If a link arrives by SMS or WhatsApp, type the official address into your browser yourself rather than clicking it.

The safe way to check status: use only smartservices.icp.gov.ae (or GDRFA Dubai for a Dubai visa). Not sure which visa you should apply for next? Try our free Golden Visa checker or read the UAE visa cost guide.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Checking a Dubai visa on ICP. Dubai residency status is on GDRFA (gdrfad.gov.ae), not ICP – the number-one cause of a false “no record found.”
  2. Paying a fake site for a free check. Status checks on the official ICP portal cost nothing.
  3. Entering data on a look-alike domain. If it is not on icp.gov.ae, do not type your passport or Emirates ID number into it.
  4. Confusing the entry permit with the residence visa. The entry permit gets you in; the residence visa and Emirates ID are issued after your medical – they show separately.
  5. Letting the Emirates ID lapse with the visa. They are linked but issued separately; renew both together to avoid a gap.

Frequently asked questions

What is ICP Smart Services?

ICP Smart Services is the official online platform of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). It lets residents, visitors and businesses apply for and renew entry permits and residence visas, manage Emirates ID, and check application status – all in one portal. You reach it at smartservices.icp.gov.ae or through the UAEICP app. Using it is free; you only pay the official fee for the specific service you request.

How do I check my UAE visa status on ICP?

Open smartservices.icp.gov.ae or the UAEICP app, choose the passport-information or visa-enquiry service, and enter your passport number, nationality and date of birth (or your unified number). The portal then shows your entry-permit or residence-visa status and its validity. Important: this works for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. For a Dubai residence visa you check on the GDRFA Dubai portal instead.

What is the difference between ICP and GDRFA?

ICP is the federal authority that runs identity, citizenship and residency services for the UAE as a whole, through its Smart Services portal. GDRFA – the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – handles residency and entry matters specifically for Dubai. In practice: if your visa is issued in Dubai, use GDRFA (gdrfad.gov.ae); if it is issued in any of the other six emirates, use ICP. Mixing the two up is the single most common reason a status check shows “no record found.”

Is the ICP Smart Services website free to use?

Yes. Creating an account and browsing the platform costs nothing, and status checks are free. You only pay the published government fee for the actual transaction you complete – for example a visa renewal, an Emirates ID renewal, or an entry permit. Be wary of look-alike sites that charge a “service fee” to do a free status check; the only official channels are smartservices.icp.gov.ae and the UAEICP app.

How do I check my Emirates ID status?

You can track an Emirates ID application on ICP Smart Services or the UAEICP app using your application (PRAN) number, or check the validity of an existing card using your Emirates ID number or passport details. The portal shows whether the card is under production, ready for collection, or delivered. If your Emirates ID is expiring, you renew it through the same platform, usually alongside your residence-visa renewal.

Which emirates use ICP for visa status and which use GDRFA?

ICP covers Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Dubai uses GDRFA. The reason is historical: Dubai kept its own residency directorate, while the other emirates run their residency services through the federal ICP system. If you are unsure where your visa was issued, the emirate shown on your entry permit or residence-visa sticker tells you which portal to use.

How do I avoid fake ICP Smart Services websites?

Only ever use smartservices.icp.gov.ae or the official UAEICP app – both sit on the government’s own domain. Unofficial sites with similar names may look convincing, charge for free checks, or harvest your passport and Emirates ID details. Never enter your data on a site that is not on icp.gov.ae, and never pay a “processing fee” for a status enquiry. If a link arrives by SMS or WhatsApp, type the official address into your browser yourself instead of clicking.
